Draft Abstract

I like that my project is something current and controversial. It has a lot of different perspectives that are equally valid, so it should be interesting to research. My biggest issue with the essay so far is deciding whether I want to take a side about whether photo manipulation is generally a good or bad thing.

Abstract

Photo-editing software, such as Photoshop or GIMP, has achieved popularity and notoriety in recent years. But photo manipulation is not a new phenomenon--pictures have been altered since the 1800s, when photographs were invented. Depending on the way in which it is used, photo editing can be a positive tool that merely creates enhanced photos, or a negative tool that attempts to alter reality either intentionally or unintentionally, leading to the public's distrust of photography as a source of truth.

My essay will include a brief background of photo editing and will explore its various uses throughout history. I'll explain some of the ways in which photos can be 'enhanced' or altered with photo editing software. I will also explore the positive and negatives ways in which it can be used, including examples of each type for analysis and comparison.

Photo editing has received a bad reputation, and with good reasons. I will talk about not only the ways in which the technology can be abused, but also the ways it can be used to present a more accurate, useful picture.

  1. I think that your topic is really interesting. almost everything today is photoshoped and editited in one way or another. I just finished taking a journalism class about media ethics. One chapter was a debate on whether or not it was ethical for photographers to photoshop a picture, even if it was a slight change. I can lend you my text book if you would like to use it as a reference!

  2. I think that your abstract is great. The only thing it's missing, to me, is the part about conclusions that you want to make or conclusions that you may possibly reach as you're doing the research for this topic.

  3. This abstract follows the guidelines well and has a clear thesis for the paper. The annotations also follow the guidelines for the most part. The first annotation doesn't have a specifically noted use.
I think that Rachel is on the right track to have a very interesting and well thought out paper!

  4. I really like this topic and think this is something a lot of people would be interested in learning about. Your annotated bib and abstract seem to me like they follow the guidelines, but you might want to make it more clear why you are using each source and how it will benefit the overall understand of your topic.

Might I just add that I love the fish thing on the top of your blog. :)

    Great job.

  5. Your abstract definitely answers the three main questions and I have a good sense of what your paper is going to entail. I think it is important that you voice your own opinion about whether or not you like photo shopping. Maybe you like some photo shopping like the astrology type and not the kind that morphs models into untouchable goddesses.
